Siding Samples

SClarkson-Siding-Mockup

For many months we explored combining different materials on the exterior - mostly stucco and cedar.  However, we decided to simplify in order to achieve a subtle more understated look.  Ultimately we selected a simple tongue and groove western red cedar board with a very small exposure - similar to flooring in width.  We will place this horizontally around the entire house.  We purchased this clear smooth cedar from Haida.

The boards have been delivered to a local staining house, and we ended up selecting Sikkens “Natural Light” - the lower right-hand sample above.

I just wanted to compliment you on your house! It looks beautiful and the documentation is a great resource. I am an architect/carpenter in Philadelphia. I was curious to the process and cost of sending your cedar to a staining house...did they select percentages of the material and stain it different colors? Did they also finish the cedar? Thanks for your time!

Nancy

Hi Justin, Thanks for the compliment. We ordered our cedar siding from Haida Forest Products. The lumber company that ordered it for us sent it directly to a finishing shop and also delivered it to us. The siding cost was $4.20/BF. The finishing cost was .72/BF. The siding and corner boards were all finished (fronts and backs) with 2 clear coats of Sikkens Natural Light. We did not use any stain. In the field, we had the installers apply the same finish to the cut ends of all boards. This prefinishing cost was $2400 (approximately 13000 LF).The delivery cost was built into this price. If budget allowed, we would have also applied one or two additional coats after installation. Since we couldn't select each and every piece, it was a bit of a gamble. When it was delivered we separated all the siding into 3 color piles (light, med, dark) and had the installers mix it up -- but used only lights and mediums on the front of the house. There was great variation in the colors, but this was not due to staining.
